An Old Contemptible

Walter Edward Suttle was born in Lackford St Lawrence, Suffolk in 1893 (Thingoe Q4-1893 4A:722), baptised in Lackford St Lawrence on 22bd April 1894, son of Samuel and Ellen Louisa SUTTLE (née DAY).

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Stubbins Road, Gazeley with his father Samuel SUTTLE [47] farm labourer, born Dunstall Green; his mother Ellen [37] born Upend; brothers William [16] and Samuel [14] both farm labourers born in Upend; sisters Edith E [12] born Upend, Gertrude M [10] born Lackford and Ethel M [5] born Gazeley and brother Cecil A [2] born in Gazeley.

1911 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was still at Stubbins Road, Gazeley with his parents, widowed sister Elizabeth NUNN [28] born Upend, brothers Cecil and Henry [9] born Gazeley, and Elizabeth's children Arthur James NUNN [7] born Gazeley, Gladys Mary NUNN [3] born Moulton and Ernest Edward NUNN [1 month] born Gazeley.

His parents had moved to Beighton, Selby, Yorkshire about the time of his death.

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
Dying in a base hospital it is impossible to be exact as to where he was wounded/taken ill, or when. The 2nd Suffolks had been holding the line in the Ypres salient opposite Wytschaete Ridge at the end of April, beginning of May 1915. They had suffered few deaths, and those were mainly men in base hospitals. They were on the edge of the action, a remarkably quiet time for them.
